Four Express Entry pathways to Canada PR

Express Entry is Canada's managed system for permanent residence — your profile is ranked by CRS score and invited through regular draws.

Express Entry · Main stream

Federal Skilled Worker (FSW)

The primary route for university-educated professionals with foreign work experience. Requires 67/100 on a separate FSW grid (not CRS), then ranked by CRS in the pool.

  • Experience 1+ year continuous skilled work (NOC TEER 0, 1, 2 or 3)
  • Education Post-secondary credential (ECA required)
  • Language CLB 7+ in English or French
  • FSW grid 67/100 (age, education, experience, language, employment, adaptability)
  • CRS range General draws: ~470–530 in 2026
Express Entry · Trades

Federal Skilled Trades (FST)

For qualified tradespeople with a valid Canadian job offer or certification — electricians, plumbers, welders, chefs and other skilled trades.

  • Experience 2+ years full-time in a skilled trade (last 5 years)
  • Language CLB 5 speaking/listening, CLB 4 reading/writing
  • Key gate Valid job offer or provincial certificate
  • Draws Separate category draws for trades
  • CRS cut-off Trades draws typically lower than FSW
Express Entry · Canadian experience

Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

For workers already in Canada with at least 1 year of skilled Canadian work experience. No education credential assessment needed.

  • Experience 1+ year skilled work in Canada (last 3 years)
  • Language CLB 7 for NOC 0/A, CLB 5 for NOC B
  • Education No minimum (but CRS rewards it)
  • Key gate Must have legal status in Canada
  • CRS range Often included in general or category draws
Provincial · +600 CRS points

Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP)

Provinces nominate candidates for PR based on local labour needs. A PNP nomination adds 600 CRS points — effectively guaranteeing an invitation.

  • Points +600 CRS (virtually guarantees ITA)
  • Allocation ~91,500 nominations for 2026
  • Process Apply to province → get nominated → enter EE pool
  • Variation Each province has different streams and criteria
  • Caution Allocations are volatile and province-specific
The occupation code

NOC & TEER — the code that decides your eligibility

Every Express Entry stream is built on the National Occupational Classification (NOC 2021). Your job maps to a 5-digit NOC code and a TEER category (0–5). Only TEER 0, 1, 2 and 3 count as "skilled" for Express Entry — so finding your correct code is the first thing to get right.

TEERWhat it meansTypical rolesExpress Entry?
TEER 0Management occupationsNursing managers, IT managers, restaurant managers✓ Eligible
TEER 1Degree-level (university)Registered nurses, engineers, software developers, doctors✓ Eligible
TEER 2Diploma / 2–3 yr college, or supervisoryParamedics, technologists, electricians (supervisory)✓ Eligible
TEER 3College < 1 yr, or on-the-job trainingLPNs/enrolled nurses, dental assistants, many trades✓ Eligible
TEER 4High school + short trainingCare aides, retail supervisors, drivers✕ Not for EE
TEER 5Short demonstration / no formal educationLabourers, harvesting workers✕ Not for EE

Getting your NOC code wrong is one of the most common reasons profiles are refused or under-scored. We confirm your exact code and TEER against your duties before you build a profile.

2026 category draws

Category-based selections — targeted invitations

Provincial Nominee Programs

PNP — province by province

A provincial nomination adds 600 CRS points and effectively guarantees an invitation. Each province runs its own streams tied to local labour needs. Most have an Express Entry–aligned stream (enhanced) plus base streams. Allocations were cut for 2026, so timing and stream choice matter more than ever.

Draw trends

Recent Express Entry draws — a snapshot

Cut-offs move with each draw type. General draws sit highest; category and PNP-specific draws cut lower. These are indicative 2026 figures to show the pattern — always check IRCC's official rounds page for the latest numbers.

The journey

Express Entry — profile to PR

The Express Entry process follows these five key stages. Timelines vary, but 6–12 months from profile to landing is typical for strong profiles.

1

Credential Assessment

Get your education assessed by a Designated Organization (WES, IQAS, etc.) — takes 4–8 weeks

2

Language Tests

IELTS General / CELPIP for English, TEF/TCF for French — higher scores mean more CRS points

3

EE Profile

Create your Express Entry profile — the system calculates your CRS score automatically

4

Invitation (ITA)

If your CRS is above the draw cut-off, you receive an Invitation to Apply for PR

5

PR Application

Submit your full PR application within 60 days — processing typically 4–8 months

Common questions

Canada PR FAQs

CRS & Express Entry

What CRS score do I need for PR?

There's no fixed passing score — it depends on the draw. General draws in 2026 typically cut off around 470–530 CRS. Category-based draws (Healthcare, STEM, Trades) often have lower cut-offs. A PNP nomination (+600 points) virtually guarantees an invitation.

How often do draws happen?

IRCC runs draws roughly every 2 weeks, but this varies. Category-based draws are less frequent. General draws may pause at times. Check IRCC's official rounds page for the latest.

Categories & eligibility

What are category-based draws?

Since 2023, IRCC can target invitations at specific occupation groups or attributes: Healthcare, STEM, Trades, French language proficiency and Transport. In 2026, category draws typically require ~12 months qualifying experience (up from 6 months in 2025).

Do I need a job offer for Express Entry?

No — for most Express Entry streams, a job offer is not required. However, a valid LMIA-backed job offer adds 50–200 CRS points, which can be significant. PNP nominations work independently of job offers.

Timeline & 2026 reality

How long does Express Entry take?

From creating your profile to PR landing: typically 6–12 months for strong profiles. ECA takes 4–8 weeks, language tests 2–4 weeks, then you wait for a draw (varies). After ITA, you have 60 days to submit your full application — IRCC targets processing in ~6 months.

Has Canada really gotten harder in 2026?

Yes. The 2026–2028 levels plan reduced targets, category draws now require ~12 months experience (up from 6), PNP allocations were cut, and low-wage LMIA restrictions tightened. Strong profiles still succeed — but honest strategy matters more than ever.
