Federal Skilled Worker, trades, Canadian experience, PNP and category-based draws — understand exactly where you stand before spending time or money.
Canada got harder in 2026 · Honest strategy matters more
Express Entry is Canada's managed system for permanent residence — your profile is ranked by CRS score and invited through regular draws.
The primary route for university-educated professionals with foreign work experience. Requires 67/100 on a separate FSW grid (not CRS), then ranked by CRS in the pool.
For qualified tradespeople with a valid Canadian job offer or certification — electricians, plumbers, welders, chefs and other skilled trades.
For workers already in Canada with at least 1 year of skilled Canadian work experience. No education credential assessment needed.
Provinces nominate candidates for PR based on local labour needs. A PNP nomination adds 600 CRS points — effectively guaranteeing an invitation.
Every Express Entry stream is built on the National Occupational Classification (NOC 2021). Your job maps to a 5-digit NOC code and a TEER category (0–5). Only TEER 0, 1, 2 and 3 count as "skilled" for Express Entry — so finding your correct code is the first thing to get right.
| TEER | What it means | Typical roles | Express Entry? |
|---|---|---|---|
| TEER 0 | Management occupations | Nursing managers, IT managers, restaurant managers | ✓ Eligible |
| TEER 1 | Degree-level (university) | Registered nurses, engineers, software developers, doctors | ✓ Eligible |
| TEER 2 | Diploma / 2–3 yr college, or supervisory | Paramedics, technologists, electricians (supervisory) | ✓ Eligible |
| TEER 3 | College < 1 yr, or on-the-job training | LPNs/enrolled nurses, dental assistants, many trades | ✓ Eligible |
| TEER 4 | High school + short training | Care aides, retail supervisors, drivers | ✕ Not for EE |
| TEER 5 | Short demonstration / no formal education | Labourers, harvesting workers | ✕ Not for EE |
Getting your NOC code wrong is one of the most common reasons profiles are refused or under-scored. We confirm your exact code and TEER against your duties before you build a profile.
Since 2023, IRCC runs category-based Express Entry draws targeting specific occupations or attributes. In 2026, the key categories are:
Nurses, physicians, pharmacists, medical technologists and allied health professionals.
Software engineers, data scientists, mathematicians, natural and applied science professionals.
Electricians, plumbers, carpenters, welders, heavy equipment operators and other construction trades.
Candidates with strong French language proficiency — a strategic advantage in Express Entry.
A provincial nomination adds 600 CRS points and effectively guarantees an invitation. Each province runs its own streams tied to local labour needs. Most have an Express Entry–aligned stream (enhanced) plus base streams. Allocations were cut for 2026, so timing and stream choice matter more than ever.
| Province | Program | In-demand focus (2026) | Notable streams |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ontario | OINP | Health, tech, trades, French-speaking | Human Capital Priorities, Skilled Trades, Employer Job Offer |
| British Columbia | BC PNP | Health, tech, childcare, construction | Skills Immigration, Tech, Health Authority |
| Alberta | AAIP | Health, agriculture, trades, tech | Alberta Opportunity, Express Entry, Rural Renewal |
| Saskatchewan | SINP | Health, trades, agriculture, transport | International Skilled Worker (EE & Occupations In-Demand) |
| Manitoba | MPNP | Trades, health, connection to Manitoba | Skilled Worker Overseas, In-Manitoba |
| Nova Scotia | NSNP | Health, early childhood, trades | Labour Market Priorities, Physician, Skilled Worker |
| New Brunswick | NBPNP | Health, trades, French-speaking | EE Labour Market, Skilled Worker with Employer |
| Prince Edward Island | PEI PNP | Health, food processing, trades | EE, Labour Impact, Work Permit streams |
| Newfoundland & Labrador | NLPNP | Health, aquaculture, tech | Skilled Worker, Priority Skills, EE |
Quebec runs its own system (Arrima / CSQ), separate from Express Entry and the PNP. Allocations, streams and pauses change frequently — we confirm which province is realistically open for your occupation at assessment.
Wondering which province gives you the best PNP odds?
Find My Best ProvinceCut-offs move with each draw type. General draws sit highest; category and PNP-specific draws cut lower. These are indicative 2026 figures to show the pattern — always check IRCC's official rounds page for the latest numbers.
| Draw type | Indicative CRS cut-off | Frequency | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| General (all programs) | ~470–530 | Roughly fortnightly (varies) | High-scoring, well-rounded profiles |
| Provincial Nominee (PNP) | ~700+ (incl. +600 bonus) | Regular | Anyone holding a provincial nomination |
| Healthcare category | ~430–500 | Periodic | Nurses, physicians, allied health (12+ mo exp) |
| STEM category | ~470–520 | Periodic | Engineers, developers, science professionals |
| Trades category | ~400–470 | Periodic | Electricians, plumbers, welders, carpenters |
| French-language category | ~380–470 | Frequent priority | Strong French (TEF/TCF) candidates — often the lowest cut-offs |
Figures are indicative and change every round. The takeaway: a strong French score or a category-eligible occupation can clear a bar that general draws never would — which is exactly where strategy earns its keep.
The Express Entry process follows these five key stages. Timelines vary, but 6–12 months from profile to landing is typical for strong profiles.
Get your education assessed by a Designated Organization (WES, IQAS, etc.) — takes 4–8 weeks
IELTS General / CELPIP for English, TEF/TCF for French — higher scores mean more CRS points
Create your Express Entry profile — the system calculates your CRS score automatically
If your CRS is above the draw cut-off, you receive an Invitation to Apply for PR
Submit your full PR application within 60 days — processing typically 4–8 months

CRS & Express Entry
There's no fixed passing score — it depends on the draw. General draws in 2026 typically cut off around 470–530 CRS. Category-based draws (Healthcare, STEM, Trades) often have lower cut-offs. A PNP nomination (+600 points) virtually guarantees an invitation.
IRCC runs draws roughly every 2 weeks, but this varies. Category-based draws are less frequent. General draws may pause at times. Check IRCC's official rounds page for the latest.
Categories & eligibility
Since 2023, IRCC can target invitations at specific occupation groups or attributes: Healthcare, STEM, Trades, French language proficiency and Transport. In 2026, category draws typically require ~12 months qualifying experience (up from 6 months in 2025).
No — for most Express Entry streams, a job offer is not required. However, a valid LMIA-backed job offer adds 50–200 CRS points, which can be significant. PNP nominations work independently of job offers.
Timeline & 2026 reality
From creating your profile to PR landing: typically 6–12 months for strong profiles. ECA takes 4–8 weeks, language tests 2–4 weeks, then you wait for a draw (varies). After ITA, you have 60 days to submit your full application — IRCC targets processing in ~6 months.
Yes. The 2026–2028 levels plan reduced targets, category draws now require ~12 months experience (up from 6), PNP allocations were cut, and low-wage LMIA restrictions tightened. Strong profiles still succeed — but honest strategy matters more than ever.
